Components

Paper building blocks

Each component looks like it was cut from coloured paper — offset shadows that cast downward, slight rotations, and lift on hover.

AI Rules — Interactive Demos

Four paper physics rules

Each rule defines how paper behaves physically. Hover, click, and focus to feel each one in action — these are the laws of Paper Craft UI.

Rule 1Layer Separation

hover: layers fan out in different directions

When you hover a stacked card, the paper layers peel apart — each one shifts in a unique direction, enlarging the layer-gap shadow to mimic real paper separating.

Hover me

Hover the stack to trigger layer separation

Rule 2Crisp Cutouts

focus: inset-shadow deepens — feels like a cutout in cardboard

Input fields use inset shadows that deepen on focus, mimicking a slot cut through thick paper board. The pressed-in feel confirms an active selection.

Rule 3Stiff Paper Feel

duration-200/300 + ease-out — no spring, no rubber bounce

Paper is stiff, not rubbery. Transitions use ease-out with no overshoot. Compare the paper-stiff ease-out against a spring — only the correct one feels like paper.

Paper (ease-out)
Wrong (spring bounce)

Notice the overshoot on spring — paper does not bounce like rubber.

Rule 4Offset Lift

translate + shadow grow proportionally — paper lifting off table

As a paper element lifts, its offset shadow grows in the same direction and proportion. The shadow offset equals the translate distance — physical consistency.

Paper craft guidelines

The philosophy of Paper Craft UI in two columns — what gives the style its warmth and what destroys it.

Layer Depth

Paper stacks have real thickness

Every UI element exists at a specific height above the paper surface. Shadows indicate elevation; closer to the surface means shorter offset shadows, further means taller.

  • 4px_4px_0px for base elements
  • 6px_6px_0px on hover lift
  • 8px_8px_0px for highest layer

Handmade Edges

Slight imperfection = authenticity

Subtle rotations of 0.5–2 degrees make elements feel placed by hand. Perfectly aligned digital grids kill the craft aesthetic — introduce deliberate, gentle tilt.

  • rotate-[1deg] on cards
  • -rotate-[0.5deg] on buttons
  • rotate-[2deg] on back layers

Warm Paper Base

Not white — paper warm #fdf6ee

The background is never pure white or cold gray. It is a warm cream paper tone #fdf6ee that makes the whole surface feel like you are looking at a craft table.

  • bg-[#fdf6ee] always
  • No dark or black backgrounds
  • Warm border #e0d8cc

Do

  • Use bg-[#fdf6ee] warm paper white as background always
  • Use offset shadows: shadow-[4px_4px_0px_rgba(0,0,0,0.08)]
  • Add slight rotation rotate-[1deg] for handmade feel
  • Use rounded-xl or rounded-2xl — avoid sharp corners
  • Lift on hover: -translate-y-1 -translate-x-0.5
  • Shadow grows with lift: hover:shadow-[6px_6px_0px]
  • Layer cards: multiple divs with rotation offsets
  • Use inset shadows for inputs to mimic paper cutouts
  • Use ease-out for transitions — paper is stiff not bouncy
  • Keep bright craft colors: #e85d75 #5cb8a5 #f5c040 #6b7fb5

Don't

  • No dark or black backgrounds — kills the paper warmth
  • No glow or neon shadow effects — paper does not glow
  • No metallic or glass morphism aesthetics
  • No sharp precise corners — looks too digital/cold
  • No fluorescent high-saturation colors
  • No drop-shadow filter — use box-shadow for paper shadow
  • No gradient glow effects on elements
  • No spring/rubber bounce easing (cubic-bezier overshoot)
  • No stacked layers moving in the same direction on hover
  • No pure white background — always use warm #fdf6ee
